Morgantown, WV – American Suzuki’s success in the showrooms and on the race track has paved the way for an unprecedented off-road sponsorship program. Suzuki joins the Grand National Cross Country Series as the first-ever title sponsor of GNCC Racing, christening the series as the Suzuki Grand National Cross Country Series.
“Suzuki has a diversity of product, from supersport bikes, to motocross, to kids’ bikes and ATVs. We have a lot of stories to tell,” says American Suzuki Advertising Manager Glenn Hansen. “We love to use racing to help us talk about the high-performance machines we build. That story is well known thanks to Matt Mladin and our supersport GSX-R line, but we’re continuing to work at the off-road side. We’ve had a lot of success over the last few years in GNCC racing, and we hope this will do an even better job of telling our story.”
Suzuki logos will adorn GNCC race tracks at all 13 rounds of the 2005 series, which kicks off next weekend with the Lone Star GNCC in Gilmer, Texas. With a potent factory racing team, including five-time GNCC Bike Champion Rodney Smith and perennial GNCC ATV threat William Yokley, as well as a large GNCC contingency program for pros and amateurs, Suzuki is supporting riders at all ends of the spectrum.
“This is the grassroots of racing,” says Hansen. “Yes, it’s a high-quality professional program that gets a great bit of media attention, but at the same time it brings in weekend riders, and that’s the best part of it. There are huge turnouts, and while there are certainly those that race the whole series, we like to reach the weekend warrior who is maybe only racing their local track and just venturing to a neighboring state. And that’ s the beauty of GNCC racing.”
The AMA-sanctioned Suzuki Grand National Cross Country series is America’s premier off-road racing series. The 13-round series is produced exclusively by Racer Productions. One of the most physically demanding sports in the world, the nearly three- hour long cross-country races lead as many as 1400 riders through tracks ranging from eight to twelve miles in length. With varied terrain including hills, mud, dirt, rocks and motocross sections, GNCC races are tests of both survival and speed. Suzuki GNCC featured sponsors include Parts Unlimited, Moose, Maxxis, Pirelli, Wiseco, Klotz, FMF and ITP, and riders compete for over $1.3 million in series prizes and contingency money. Associate sponsors include Moose Utility Division, Scott, Alpinestars, Ohlins, Cometic, Outerwears, Pro Armor, Race Tools, Twin Air, SFB Racing, Thor, Racer X Illustrated, Motion Pro, Moto-Tee’s, Warrior and Laeger’s.
